Jessica Judd World Youth 800m silver medalist |
The past few months in Barcelona have not been the best. First losing my job, less than a week later the boyfriend loses his, the crisis has hit hard! But with my new found free time I went to see some inspiring young sports people and now, well, now I am doing a Super Sprint

This P n B was first seen in the Raith matchday Programme from the 15th September. Raith were taking on Airdrie, and after a rocky past few weeks a win was a must. It was a great 2-0 display that gave Rovers the boost they needed.

Barcelona is a
stunning city, I know I maybe a little biased but if you have visited the city
you are bound to agree. I am of
course talking about the architecture, the food, the beaches and of course the
weather makes a big difference to how great this place can be, but what I love
the most about this city is it’s sportiness! Not just its sports clubs but how
much sport goes on in this city. Since moving to Barcelona I have seen such a
variety of sport, from athletics to American football, marathon running to motor
racing, it has been a sports fan’s delight. But with all this sport watching I
was not really sports doing! I was becoming more and more an armchair fan and
this was resulting in a couch potato!
One
of the sporting events I decided to go and watch live was the World Junior
Athletics Championships. My 17-year-old second cousin was going to be competing
in the 800m and 1500m races and at 12 euros for 6 days of athletics I could not
really say no. The Olympic stadium
in Barcelona is beautiful and with glorious sunshine the week was at least
going to be picturesque, little did I know that it was going to result in
something a lot more. Over the
week we witnessed some amazing things, we saw future Olympic champion Keshorn
Walcott throw his javelin, young Brit Adam Gemeli sprint to his 100m gold, my
relative, Jessica Judd win silver in the 800 meters and finish 5th
with a personal best in the 1500m,.We saw something truely inspirational and if
I am honest something that made me feel slightly embarrassed at my “armchair
potato fan” physique.
Fitness,
I think, is one of the most important things in the modern game of
football. With at the statistics
surrounding the game it is clear to see that players have to run a good few kms
and sprint at a moments notice to keep up with the pace. You here the managers and players
talking about not being “match fit” and that being the reason for poor
results. Players need to be fit
and ready, even after the summer!
Now
at the start of my “fitness season” I thought, hey I am still fit (ish) just
not quite “match fit”, but I could not have been more wrong! I was beyond
un-fit, I couldn’t run a 100 centimetres never mind a few kilometres, after a
few miles on the bike I was dying and a once confident swimmer was just getting
a few hundred meters up the beach. It was not a pretty sight. Luckily Barcelona is a pretty sight and
that is one of the things that has kept me going.
I live pretty much in the Olympic
village and this means I swim along the beach that hosted the beach volley
ball, run along the promenade that over looks the Olympic port and cycle the
’92 marathon route, this kind of Olympic legacy is defiantly inspiring! I was starting to be part of the
sportiness that I loved about Barcelona, so much so I decided to put myself to
the test. As a result of Barcelona having so many great sporting venues it
plays host to many different sporting events, one of these being triathlons,
and with over 6000 competitors the Garmin triathlon is one of the world
biggest, and I have decided to give it a go. I have entered the super sprint
event to ease me into this triathlon game. On October 7th I will be
swimming 400m, cycling 10km and running 2.5km, what have I let myself in
for!
